Storefront Ensemble

The Storefront Ensemble encourages 7th and 8th graders in Hunts Point to tell their stories.

The Storefront Ensemble offers students the opportunity to write about themselves, their neighborhood, or the world, finding their own voice and the strength and importance of their personal stories. Through an intensive writing curriculum, scholars are taught to write in a variety of styles and challenged to extensively edit their work. As the program continues, selected pieces of writing are turned into collaborative and ensemble based performances. Those pieces are then compiled into an original performance for the community.

Students meet after-school, two-to-three times a week, for 8 months to develop and hone their writing skills, strengthen their voice and performance techniques, and grow together as an ensemble.

The ensemble encourages self-confidence, determination, setting and meeting high expectations, learning through mistakes, and community building in an effort to exemplify the words “all that is good, takes work!”
