Located less than 10 miles from Time Square, Hunts Point is the highest-risk New York City neighborhood for child well-being.
Hunts Point is home to over 4,000 children whose families struggle to plan for their futures, often lacking access to the resources they need to live healthy, fulfilled lives. Hunts Point children are disproportionately affected by the barriers to quality education and basic needs, in fact, 54% of Hunts Point children live in poverty, with 27% of community families living on less than $15,000 a year (Citizen’s Committee for Children, 2019). The long-term impact of growing up in poverty is far-reaching, often impeding young children’s ability to build meaningful attachments, develop social-emotional skills necessary to navigate school and work, and negatively influences children’s academic success.
At HPAC, we believe that empowered communities can change the world.
We build long-term relationships with children, families, and partner organizations that are honest, inclusive, authentic, and focused on ensuring our community has access to the necessary academic, social, mental, and physical health tools and opportunities they need to move forward.
Designed to meet the evolving needs of our community, our multigenerational programs build confidence, develop skills and inspire hope for Hunts Point children and youth while empowering parents to be advocates for themselves and their families. Through year-long education and arts programming, supportive services for families, and community alliance-building, we work to ensure every Hunts Point child has the opportunity to thrive and embody their limitless potential.
