Online Tutoring provides educational support to community students from Kindergarten - High School and provides economic support to Hunts Point college students.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HPAC stepped in to ensure that all the students enrolled in our programs were provided the necessary support to persevere through challenging times. One of the programs created in response to the pandemic is the unique HPAC Online Tutoring Program. This program provides educational support to Hunts Point/Longwood students in need of tutoring, as well as financial support to college students. Students in the program will receive 1-1 individual tutoring support from college students in core subjects such as Math, Science, English, and History.
All engaged college tutors will receive 2 hours of training in technology usage (Zoom and Google Drive), code of conduct and working with children’s policies, child abuse training, and how to apply teaching strategies to tutoring (social-emotional learning, learning styles, culturally responsive teaching, and gradual release of responsibility). All participating tutors are evaluated on a weekly basis by families/students in the following areas:
Helping students establish a good starting point for tutoring session.
Keeping a “hands off” approach to the student’s work (explaing, not doing)
Encouraging students to do more talking/explaining/doing.
Asking open-ended questions to promote critical thinking.
Giving student enough time to think before answering questions when prompted.
Encouraging students to evaluate his/her own work.
Giving confirming statements that were tied to specific accomplishments, helping the student know what to keep doing independently of tutoring.
Checking for understanding before moving forward.
Referring to other sources of information during the session.
Helping students identify what they will do independently when the session is complete.
