To end a year of literacy and fun, HPAC’s PS 48 Readers to Leaders scholars recreated and performed one of their favorite stories, Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockette Johnson. The scholars dramatized this story by adding themselves to the story, drawing illustrations, writing a sentence describing their picture, and then organizing their unique pictures to create Readers to Leaders and the Rainbow Crayon.
Readers to Leaders is a kindergarten after-school program that focuses on literacy and language development for students who are performing below grade-level. The Readers to Leaders and the Rainbow Crayon was the end of the year culminating project for their storytelling curriculum. All the students contributed to the book and end the year performance. Throughout this process the scholars gained a sense of community and literacy skills while using storytelling.
