Hunts Point Scholars Volunteer to Clean the Bronx River

Our Scholars give back to their community by joining Project WASTE with Bronx River Alliance

In Hunts Point, we understand the importance of taking care of the environment and giving back to our communities. On Saturday, November 17th, our community service team members cleaned the Bronx River in partnership with the Bronx River Alliance’s Project WASTE (Waterway And Street Trash Elimination). Project WASTE addresses floatable trash, one of the three major water quality issues on the Bronx River.

Fully dressed in waders and gloves, our brave scholars went into the river on a chilly Saturday morning to help pick up some of the trash that was caught along a trash boom. Not only did we help pick up the trash but we recorded everything we found, making us more than volunteers, but also scientists collecting data. The students found all sorts of trash like plastic bottles, tiny nerf gun bullets, styrofoam cups, basketballs, cigarette buds, and so much more. In the end, we collected NINE trash bags full of garbage.

Thank you to the Bronx River Alliance for taking us on this unforgettable and rewarding experience.
